Prime Minister of Mongolia. He served as the Prime Minister of Mongolia twice: He was appointed to serve from February 21, 1928 to April 27, 1930 and second from March 22, 1936 to March 7, 1939. He also served as head of state of Mongolian People's Republic from 1932 to 1936. He is best remembered as a respected politician known for his aggressive defense of Mongolian independence while confronting growing Soviet domination. However, he was powerless in stopping the Soviet People's Commissariat for Internal Affairs from carrying out mass purges by Joseph Stalin of nearly 30,000 Mongolians during his second term as prime minister. His popularity ultimately led to his purge by Soviet backed Mongolian officials who had him charged with counterrevolution in 1939. He was sent to Moscow for trial and executed on July 10, 1941. Born the son of a respected, yet penniless, nobleman, he was well-educated and advanced from being a local official to a position in the foreign ministry of Autonomous Mongolia from 1913 to 1919. His political career continued with him joining the Mongolian People's Party in 1923. On December 15, 1956, after reviewing Stalin's purges, military collegiums found no evidence of Amar's guilt. On January 25, 1962, he was rehabilitated, and on September 26, 1989, his membership in the Mongolian People's Republic restored.
