William Colvill, Sr. was born about 1767 in Scotland. He came to Forestville, New York in September, 1820 from Krikcaldy, Fifeshire, Scotland with his wife, Jean (or Jane) and their children. Jean died in 1830. He remarried Hannah Colburn in 1832. Hannah was born in 1797 in Ireland and died after 1860, probably at Forestville, New York.

Jean and William are said to be buried at Pioneer Cemetery, but no legible stones mark their graves.

Family tradition indicates that the Colvill family must have been both a family of means and education in Scotland. At least William, Jr. and David were both well educated at the University of Edinburg. (William said he was a classmate of Thomas Carlyle.) It is said that the father suffered business reverses which forced him into bankruptcy. Thus he decided to emigrate to America in hopes of improving the family financial prospects.

He came to Forestville, NY where he purchased a farm on which part of the village of Forestville now stands, as well as the grist mill early built by Jehiel Moore, who was the first settler at Forestville. Here they again became prosperous and influectial leaders in their community.

His children were...
1) Marjorie b. 1795 - died of TB after having her first? son William
2) William Jr. b. 1797
3) David G. b. 1800 - was a physician in Forestville
4) George b. 1803
5) Elizabeth b. 1805 m. William Holbrook
6) Jane m. Ernest Mullet
7) Margaret m. Augustus F. Corry. resided in Elmira, NY
8) Walter - died of TB at age 18
9) Robert - Said to have been a sailor. Did not emigrate to America
