John is survived by Sylvia, his wife of 51 years, daughters Tanis Gillis (Daniel), Janelle Braun (Adam) and five grandchildren, Jonathan, Matthew, Juliana, Brooklynn and Isabella.
He was predeceased by his dad Cyril Baker, his mother Jessie, his half-sister Jean Thomas and his older brother Jim.
John was born in Teulon, MB, on August 13, 1938. He grew up in Killarney where his dad ran Baker Agencies.
He worked with Manitoba Hydro for 38 years and spent most of his career in Steinbach until his retirement in 1994.
John and Sylvia enjoyed many trips in their motor home, travelling from coast to coast with their family. After his retirement, they spent winters in Palm Springs. John also loved gardening, boating, joking with the grandkids and spoiling their cocker spaniel Darby. He was a meticulous builder and repairman, with the ability to fix anything.
To John, everything was always 110 percent, no matter what kind of day he was having. With his unique laugh, welcoming smile and positive outlook on life, he touched so many others and left them happier for having known him.
The family would like to thank Dr. Curtis Krahn and the staff at CancerCare at Bethesda Hospital in Steinbach for their compassionate care.
A celebration of John's life will be held on Friday, March 17, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. at Birchwood Funeral Chapel in Steinbach. A private interment will follow.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Southern Health – Sante Sud – in memo line Bethesda Regional Health Center – CancerCare.
