Obituary -- It is with feelings of no ordinary regret, that we sit down to perform the melancholy task of recording the death of Doct. SAMUEL SHUMAN. He closed his terrene existence, and exchanged the toils of time, we hope, for the joys of a happy eternity, on last Tuesday evening about 9 o'clock, after a short illness, which he bore with remarkable composure and resignation, leaving behind "the wife of his youth and the pledge of his love," together with many sympathizing relatives and friends to lament his premature demise.

Dr. Shuman was a young gentleman of first rate talents, which were well cultivated, and had rendered him pre-eminently qualified for usefulness in his profession. All who enjoyed the happiness of an intimate acquaintance with him, and had capacity to to discern a strong & penetrating mind, correct & discriminating judgement, and extensive and profitable erudition, will doubtless admit that these rare and estimable advantages were in an uncommon degree possessed by him.

Although in his first advances he was somewhat reserved, and very modest and unassuming, yet upon a nearer acquaintance, he became affable and communicative, and his conciliatory manners and courteous and interesting conversation never failed to enlist the affections, and gain the respect and confidence of those with whom he associated.

It is but justice to the attending physician to state, that he had succeeded by the divine blessing in effecting an entire cure; so that the deceased on the Saturday preceding his dissolution, was able to sit up, and his active zeal to benefit others, actually prepared medicine and gave directions for the administration to his patients. But the exertion that this work of benevolence required, together with other exercise, too severe for the extreme debility under which he then necessarily labored, brought on a fearful relapse, which bid defiance to the power of medicine, and baffled the skillful and indefatigable attentions of his eminent medical friend.

The excessive grief occasioned by this very afflicting dispensation, is considerably alleviated by the solacing reflection, that he "fell asleep" with the joyful hope, of a triumphant resurrection and the delightful prospect of attaining to a participation in that inheritance which is "incorruptible, undefiled and fadeth not away."

On the day of his death, he conversed with a coolness and composure that astonished the spectators, concerning his dissolution, and viewed it as inevitable and rapidly approaching. He expressed his firm belief in the doctrine of atonement through the mediation and infinite merits of a crucified Saviour, and with manifest symptoms of unfeigned contrition, earnestly prayed for salvation according to the simple but glorious plan exhibited in the Gospel.
