Glyn Tarpley, 87, of Hawley, passed away Saturday, February 3, 2007.

Services will be held at 2:00; p.m. Tuesday at Abilene Funeral Home Chapel of Hope, 3349 N. 12th Street with Pastor Joseph Jones officiating, assisted by Mr. Tarpley's nephew, Barry Glover. Burial, with military honors, will follow in the Compere Cemetery, directed by Abilene Funeral Home.

Mr. Tarpley was born March 30, 1919, in Merkel to Boyd and Octavia Tarpley. He was raised on a farm and attended school in the Compere and Noodle communities. He served in the US Army 36th Division - Service Company 144 Infantry and 8th Division - Service Company 104 Infantry and 414 Infantry from 1941 until 1945. He served in four major European theater campaigns in Normandy, Central Europe, Northern France and Rhineland. Glyn Tarpley and Nancy Glover were married July 18, 1947, in Abilene. He operated a service station on South 8th and Oak Street for almost twenty years and did contract work for Southwestern Bell Telephone and AT and T until his retirement in 1986. His greatest enjoyment was working with the 4-H and FFA youth. He was active as an adult leader in Taylor County 4-H, serving on several county committees and livestock committees for Abilene High and Hawley FFA.

Survivors include his wife, Nancy Tarpley of Hawley; two sons, William Lynn Tarpley of Hawley and Matt Tarpley and wife Toni of Fort Stockton; two grandsons, Evan Tarpley of Stephenville and Troy Tarpley of Fort Stockton; a granddaughter, Lauren Tarpley of College Station; two sisters, Radie Howerton of Abilene and Wanee Aaberg of Waukee, Iowa; and 17 nieces and nephews.

Mr. Tarpley was preceded in death by a sister, Ruby Sutton; two brothers, Jack and Billy Boyd Tarpley; a nephew, John Sutton and a great nephew, Steven Howerton.

A visitation will be from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
