Son of Hugh and Mary McPhail. He married first Margaret McDonald (1833-1884). They had at least four children.


Civil War Veteran - Enlisted on September 14, 1864, age 31, and mustered on September 14, 1864, into 29th Company, Unattached Massachusetts Heavy Artillery (Union). Enlistment Rank: Private.


The 29th was organized September 20, 1864. Ordered to Washington October 29, 1864, and on garrison duty in the Defenses of Washington, D.C., till June 1865. Attached to 1st Brigade, DeRussy's Division, 22nd Army Corps.


Mustered out on June 16, 1865.
