The Rev. Dr. Ralph Clyde Brittain, Sr., 83, of 323 Third St. NW in Hickory died Sept. 8, 2004 at Frye Regional Medical Center.

A lifelong Hickory area resident and former senior pastor of Healing Springs Church in Hickory, the Rev. Brittain received his grad-uation from his earthly life to his heavenly home on Sept. 8, 2004.

He was born June 23, 1921, to the late Daniel Edgar Brittain and Georgia Hicks Brittain Banks. The Rev. Brittain was an eagle scout and a graduate of Claremont Central High School, Hickory, class of 1938. He attended Oak Ridge Military Academy and Lenoir-Rhyne college, but World War II interrupted his education, and he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force on June 23, 1942. He served as a staff sergeant 20th Combat Mapping Squadron, 6th Photo Reconnaissance Group. He was an aerial photographer and gunner on a B-24 in the Southwest Pacific.

The Rev. Brittain was former owner of City Coal Co. in Hickory. The Rev. Brittain and his wife, Hilda, were founders of Brittain Ministries Inc. in 1976 and founders of Healing Springs Church of Hickory in 1980, where he served as senior pastor from 1980 to 1992. From 1976 to his graduation he was involved with all activities of Brittain Mini-stries, a ministry of world wide evangelism. The Rev. Brittain was awarded an honorary doctorate of divinity degree in 1984 by Indi-ana Christian University. The accomplish-ments of Brittain Ministries have been the publication of books and media, and the establishment of a fellowship of licensed and ordained ministers.

In addition to his parents, the Rev. Brittain was preceded in death by infant twins, David Lee and Joy Louise Brittain; a sister, Polly Brittain Abee; and a son-in-law, Dr. Rob Chapin.

Surviving are his wife of 62 years, Hilda Flowers Brittain; a sister, Hazel Brittain Twisdale of Hickory; a daughter, June Brittain Cherry and husband, John, of Cornelius; a son, Ralph B. Brittain, Jr. and wife, Judi, of Huntersville; a son, Daniel Edgar Brittain and wife, Fonda, of Hickory; a daughter, Mary B. Chapin-Stamey and husband, Harvey, of Hickory; eleven precious grandchildren, Jeff Brittain, Hannah Brittain Cobb, Kirk Brittain, David Brittain, Jennifer Chapin, Christopher Chapin, Andrew Chapin, Jackson Stamey, Jonathan Stamey, Kathryn Cherry Brotherton and Mary Lynn Cherry Gaines; five precious great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be conducted by Pastor Bradley Spencer at 4 p.m. Saturday at Healing Springs Church, 1855 Sixth St. Se, Hickory.

The family will receive friends at Healing Springs Church two hours prior to the service. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery in Hickory, with military graveside rites conducted by American Legion Post 48 in Hickory.
