A lifelong Hickory area resident, Hazel graduated from Claremont Central High School in 1932. She graduated from Lenoir Rhyne College in 1935 at the age of 19 and was chosen the "Queen of May" her senior year. Hazel taught school at Longview Elementary School for 35 years. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church and later, St. Luke's United Methodist Church. While in college, Hazel met the love of her life, Lawrence, who often referred to her as his "May Queen".
Interment in Oakwood Cemetery.
