Union Civil War Soldier. He served with the 115th U.S. Colored Infantry, Company E. The regiment was organized at Bowling Green, Kentucky in the summer of 1864. They performed fatigue and garrison duties at Lexington, Kentucky and Petersburg, Virginia until they were sent to be part of the occupation forces at Richmond, Virginia from April to May, 1865. Lawler took ill during his time in the service and died in August at a military hospital at Camp Dennison near Cincinnati, Ohio. He was initially buried in Waldschmidt Cemetery at Camp Dennison and was later removed to Spring Grove Cemetery on July 4, 1869. Records indicate that there are various spellings of his name. His interment record at the cemetery lists his last name spelled as Lollar. The interment listing has his first name as Ephriam and his soldier record and grave marker spell his name as Ephraim Lawler. There are also some family members that spell the last name as Loller. He is honored for his service on the African American Civil War Memorial in Washington D.C. in section D, number 115.
