He was born on the family Farm to Lewis and Esther Berhow. He was called Walter in some records. He had a 5th grade education.
Her married Mable Theresa Olson on Oct. 5, 1910 in Story County. He was a farmer, first in Huxley and then in Brookfield, Worth County. In 1930 census they list ten children:

7. Frances Arlene, 9, born Aug. 9, 1919 -February 1, 2014.

Sometime after 1930 they moved to Huxley and from Huxley to Ames after 1935 with six of their youngest. He did odd jobs for the Iowa State College while his two daughters, Marjorie and Frances were maids for a private home.
