Confederate Civil War Cavalry Officer. He served with the 1st Battalion Kentucky Cavalry, Company A. He was mustered into the regiment as a Captain and then promoted to Major. He was killed in battle at the age of 52. He was the son of Joseph and Sarah "Sallie" Ewalt Shawhan and the husband of Tabitha Rush Shawhan whom he married in Bourbon County, Kentucky.
