Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. After serving the first few months of the war as a Regular Army officer (1st Lieutenant, 6th United States Regular Infantry), and as an aide to Major General William S. Rosecrans, he was commissioned as major of the 3rd Maryland Volunteer Cavalry. Promoted to lieutenant colonel on January 23, 1864, he commanded the regiment during the Red River Campaign. He was awarded two brevet promotions to colonel and to brigadier general of US Volunteers on September 6, 1865 for "gallant and meritorious services during the war". He was mustered out on September 7, 1865. He died from heart complications in Cincinnati. He was buried in his family's lot at Spring Grove Cemetery on March 14, 1882. (His body was in a public vault for 3 ½ months).
