Mr. George Roy Afton, age 86, a lifetime resident of Kent City, passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 11, 2017 at Story Point of Rockford.
He was a retired electrical lineman and a veteran of United States Army who served his country during the Korean War.
Mr. Afton was born in Chester Township, Michigan in May of 1931 to Clare Douglas Afton and his wife Coy Telva McCune. He graduated from Kent City High School in 1950 and pursued his career as a lineman.
He lovingly married Miss Virginia Mae Anderson, in the spring of 1952, at Mamrelund Lutheran Church in Kent City, Michigan. She will miss him dearly, as they recently shared their 65th wedding anniversary. Mr. Afton is also survived by his daughters, Kay and Ron Griffith, Lenee and David Anderson, as well as his son, Todd and Ronda Afton. He was a grandfather to Eric (Heather), Brian, Jaimie (Kevin), Josh, Ben, Tom (Rachel), Ang, Jessica, Nicole, Nadine and Elizabeth, and 9 great grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters, June and George Umlor, Jane and Jim Plite; many in-laws and several nieces and nephews.
The family welcomes relatives and friends to the visitation on Monday, May 15, from 2:00-4:00 p.m. and 6:00-8:00 p.m. at MAMRELUND LUTHERAN CHURCH COMMUNITY CENTER, 4085 Lutheran Church Road in Kent City. The funeral service will be held the following day, at MAMRELUND LUTHERAN CHURCH, on Tuesday, May 16, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. with visitation one hour prior to his service.
Interment will take place at Idlewild Cemetery in Kent City, Michigan.
Memorials may be made to Friends of the Michigan Veteran's Home in his memory.
