Robert Howlett was born in 1797 to Maria (Smith) and Samuel Howlett in Frostendon, Suffolk.
He married Harriet Marsant, elder daughter of the surgeon Thomas Harsant and Mary (Hoyle) of Wickham Market on 20 November 1827. Of their four sons, only the middle sons Robert and Thomas survived infancy.
He became Rev. Robert Howlett, serving at the Church of St James, of Dunwich, Suffolk in 1832, the year the new church was built. In 1835 he was vicar at the tiny village of Blythburgh with its enormous old Church of Holy Trinity. Then in December 1841 he moved with his wife and two sons to Norfolk where he held his longest parish position for the united Perpetual Curacies of Longham and Wendling and was nominated trustee of Wendling Poor's Stock.
Sons Robert and Thomas grew up mostly in Norfolk until Robert headed to London to pursue photography and Thomas became a farmer, both enabled by a bequest from their maternal grandfather when they turned twenty-one. Robert was up and coming in the new photography profession only to die shortly into his career at age 27.
Robert's last parish assignment, during at least 1861-1866, was Perpetual Curate of St. Margaret in Hopton, Suffolk.
Robert and Harriett buried their infant sons in St Peter's Church in Theberton, Suffolk and Robert at the ancient Wendling parish churchyard of his vicarage of so many years.
Robert married Fanny Russell after Harriett died.
He died at New Hampton, Middlesex after serving twenty years as Perpetual Curate of Longham and Wendling, and eleven years as Vicar of Hopton by Yarmouth.
