WILLIAM SKILLEN, PIONEER IN CITY, CALLED BY DEATH
Man Who Resided Here Over Half Century Is Summoned
William Skillen, 83, resident of Iron Mountain for the last 54 years, died at 10:30 p.m.
last night at home, 1101 Prospect Avenue, following an illness of the last 17 months.
He was one of the oldest remaining pioneer residents of the community.
Born in the Lake District, Cumberland County, the son of James & Elizabeth [Farmer] Skillen & was of Scotch-Irish descent.
In 1884, accompanied by his wife, the late Jane M. Skillen, he moved to Iron Mountain. He was employed as track foreman for the Chapin Mining Co, retiring in 1914, when
he took up farming. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church. His favorite hobbies were reading & gardening.
He enjoyed excellent health until 6 years ago when he suffered a heart attack while attending the funeral of his son, William Ewart, in Chicago.
2 daughters, Margaret & Wilfred, were with their father when he died. In addition he is survived by 2 others daughters: Miss Elizabeth, Jackson, Mich. & Miss Mary, Lancaster, Pa. 2 sisters live in England. Burial will be in Cemetery Park.
