The marker for Alexander Strickland in Cartecay Methodist Church Cemetery is strictly a cenotaph. In the 1970s a descendant of Calvin Strickland (s/o Alexander) contacted my sister wanting to place a marker for Alexander. My Dad (Ernest) had visited the grave many years before.
My sister, my brother-in-law, and my Dad met Calvin's descendant at Cartecay; however my Dad did not recognize the cemetery and could not locate where Alexander was buried. So the marker was placed at a location picked to be a likely spot. According to church records there is not even a grave at this location.
I was not aware of this placement. Both my Dad and my sister had passed on when I found this marker and thought I had found what I had been looking for for so long. However when relaying my find to my brother-in-law he enlightened me of the above.
It is my belief that Alexander and his wife Mary Fowler Strickland are buried in unmarked graves in the cemetery at the old church site.

which was not known to my dad and my sister at the time of their visit.
I had heard about the old church site and cemetery when I visited in 2002 but was unable to locate them because it was totally overgrown with brush. It has since been restored but, to my knowledge, there are no records of the interments there excepting the few readable markers.

Additional info:
It should be noted that NO Alexander Strickland who would match this year of birth ever appears in Gilmer Co census data. Info in BIO indicates that his wife's name was Mary; I would assume she was born about same time as Alexander.

Strickland first appears in Gilmer Co census data in 1860 ...

In the 1860 census, HH 1024 is a George W. Strickland, age 25, b GA; wife Sarah, age 18, b NC, 9-mo old Henry Strickalnd, b GA - AND a Mary Strickland, age 60, born SC. Might this be the wife of Alexander Strickland? Note, though, that Mary Strickland does NOT appear in later census data.

Also in 1860 census, HH 1048, is Joshua Strickland (married Jane Jerusha Ellington in 1858), his wife & a 1 yr-old son. Living with them are L. D. Strickland (male), age 20; Mary Strickland, age 18, and 11 year old Robert Richardson. All of these people born in GA. With this couple in 1870 is a "new" Strickland - 18 year old Thomas born in GA.

In HH 1101 is an Auther (Arthur?), age 52, b SC; wife Nancy b VA; four daughters ranging in age from 22 to 15 born in NC; and a fifth daughter, age 13, born in GA. Is this Strickland family supposed to be a part of Alexander Strickland family? (This family still in Gilmer in 1880 census; it appears the family I was researching married a daughter of this Strickland family!)

In 1860, HH 444 was an Andrew J. Strickland, age 42, b GA; wife Elisa b NC; several children all of whom were born in GA except the oldest who was born in AL. It does not appear that this family lived near the other Strickland families; they do not appear again in Gilmer Co census.

In 1870, we FINALLY find the name of Alexander Strickland in HH #263 - the 5-year old son of the aforementioned George & Sarah Strickland. (He married in 1885.)

Although L. D. Strickland (HH #1048 in 1860) married Elizabeth Pettit in Gilmer Co in 1868, they are NOT listed in 1870 census, but are listed in 1880.

I would have no problem with an Alexander Strickland born in 1800 possbly being buried at the original cemetery of Cartecay UMC but find it hard to accept that he died in 1895 in Gilmer Co - without any record of his existence in Gilmer Co!! I tend to believe somebody didn't have their facts straight re his date of death. (BTW, I'm convinced that another couple I've researched are buried in that same old cemetery; there are no legible markers but lots of other supporting data.)
