He was an Icelandic lexicographer. As a student came Eiríkur Jónsson to Copenhagen in 1846, where he then stayed as stipendiar by the Arnamagnæan Collection from 1872. From 1874 he was vice dean at Regensen and temporary as regensprovst in 1875-1876. He has authored a rich Icelandic - Danish lexicon: Old Norse Dictionary (1863), has been widely used. In addition, he participated in the publication of various oldskrifter which Njala and Hauksbók. Finally, he wrote in a number of years the Icelandic literature company Ooersigt of foreign events every year, Skírnir.
