Professional Football Player. For eleven seasons (1979 to 1989), he played at the punter position in the National Football League with the Philadelphia Eagles, San Francisco 49ers and Cleveland Browns. Born Max Culp Runager, he attended Orangeburg-Wilkinson High School in South Carolina where he made his initial mark on the football field. He played collegiate football at the University of South Carolina, prior to being signed by the Philadelphia Eagles during the 8th round of the 1979 NFL Draft. He was a contributor to the Eagles' capturing of the NFC Title in 1981, which resulted in an appearance in the Super Bowl (1981). He experienced a Super Bowl championship with the San Francisco 49ers in 1985. After a stint with the Cleveland Browns in 1988, he returned to the Eagles and concluded his career after the 1989 season. In 144 regular season games, he compiled 661 punts for 26,581 yards. After retiring from football, he worked as a teacher.
