Jasper had enlisted on August 20, 1862 at the age of 19 years. He was in General James A. Garfield's Regiment, which was the 42nd Regiment of the Ohio Volunteer Infantry (OVI), in Company B. Jasper N. Richards died on Feb. 16, 1863 at Young's Point, Louisiana, during the Civil War. Jasper Richards died and was buried in Louisiana, but was later moved to Mississippi to be buried in the Vicksburg National Cemetery.
Jasper's older brother William Richards, had been in the same Regiment and same Company, and had died of Typhoid Fever, at the Army General Hospital at Ashland, Kentucky on February 28, 1862--before Jasper enlisted. William's military headstone is located in his hometown in northern Ohio and it is assumed that he is buried there.
