Breckje was the daughter of Hans Hansen Bergen and Sara Jorise Rapalje. She was born in what is now present day Brooklyn in 1642. Her father died about 1653 and her mother married soon, to a man named Theunis Gybertszen. His last name may have been Middagh or Bogaert. A search of the records of that time comes up with only two men named Theunis Gysbertsen in New Amsterdam at that time, they were named Bogaert and Middagh. Keeping in mind that Dutch family names were in a state of flux at the time because of the English influence in New Amsterdam, the two could possibly have been the same man. They were both from a small town named Heykoop. Theunis Middaugh was known to have a grown son named Aert, and Breckje was married to Aert about 1659, and they both joined the Brooklyn Dutch Reformed Church in 1664. Aert was one of the seven petitioners to the Dutch government to incorporate the village of Brooklyn.

Aert traveled back and forth between Holland and New Amsterdam, usually taking his family with, so some of their children were born in Holland, although all were raised in America. Breckje and Aert lived in Brooklyn, and probably died there, but no record of their deaths has ever been found. There is, however, a chance that Breckje died in Holland.
