Freda Lavurn Armstrong King, 90, passed away on July 13, 2017 in Bartlesville, OK with her family surrounding her.
She was a resident of Bartlesville for the past 47 years.
Freda was best known as Mother, Mom, Aunt Freda, Grandma, or Gee Gee.
She was born in Wister, OK in the Indian Territory on June 24, 1927 to the late Marcus Page Armstrong and Blanche Anne (Estes) Armstrong. She was the second of ten children.
She grew up in Phillips, TX and graduated from Phillips High School in 1944. After graduation, she went to work for Dr. Petty as a medical assistant. That was to be her only employment outside the home. She excelled in her life long career which spanned over seventy years as a homemaker.
On April 26, 1946 she married the love of her life, Fredrick E. King. They were married 46 years before his death. She served as a military wife for 22 years. In that time she lived and traveled in numerous states and lived outside of the country.
She had several interests such as reading, cooking and sewing. While attending high school she took sewing classes and won many awards. She will be remembered as a very good cook along with her candy at Christmas time.
From sewing, Freda learned to make many beautiful quilts for each member of her family. She was always happiest while she was working on one of her quilts.
Freda loved her family. Earlier in her daughters' lives, she served as a Girl Scout leader for several years. She taught her daughters to be hard working, honest and independent women. They all learned family values and treasured them.
Those left behind to honor and cherish her memory are her four daughters, Sandy Spencer (Bill) of Bartlesville, Donna Bennett (Jim) of Yukon, Pam McMillan of Bartlesville, and Terri Magerkurth (Paul) of Norman.
She is also survived by a niece who lived in the home, Patricia Grimm (Dan) of Bartlesville.
Freda has five surviving sisters; Shirley Baze, Barbara Pitcock, Wanda Armstrong, Cathy Mahler, and Kay Calhoun. She has one surviving sister-in-law, Elizabeth Armstrong.
She has three surviving brothers-in-law, Kenneth Benton, Ed Mahler, and Phillip Calhoun.
Freda had seven grandchildren: Chris Drew, Jennifer Clasby (Aaron), Scott Bennett, Sean McMillan (Karissa), Amanda Shirley (Dave), Leslie Dodd (Jeremy), and Andrew Magerkurth (Kristen).
She had one great niece, Danielle Brashear (Travis) and one great nephew, Kevin Grimm.
Freda had nine great grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
She is also survived by her beloved dog, Pebbles. Freda will be greatly missed by all who loved her.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, her parents, her brother, Clytee Armstrong, three sisters, Betty Jo Armstrong, Lodema Benton, and Jeannette Eads, and her great granddaughter, Abigail Martin.
Pallbearers are Chris Drew, Sean McMillan, Scott Bennett, Aaron Clasby, Andrew Magerkurth, Kevin Grimm, Jeremy Dodd, Dave Shirley, and Travis Brashear. Honorary Pallbearers are James Bennett, Paul Magerkurth, Dan Grimm, and Bill Spencer.
The family will be receiving friends from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Services will be under the direction of Walker-Brown Home in Bartlesville, OK in the Walker-Brown Chapel on Monday, July 17, 2017 at 10:00 a.m.
Interment will be at Memorial Park Cemetery in Bartlesville, OK beside her husband.
In lieu of flowers, donations may may be made to: The Wounded Warriors Fund, PO Box 2396, Tulsa, OK 74101-2396 to honor all veterans of all wars who sacrificed for our freedom.
