George Frederick Helmer, was born on June 9, 1706, as Georg Friedrich Helmer, in Neustadt an der Weinstrasse, a city in the Rhineland-Palatinate region in southwestern Germany, to Philipp and Elisabeth (Mockler) Helmer. He emigrated to America, with his parents, sometime before 1710, and eventually settled in one of the numerous Palatine German farming communities on the south side of the Mohawk River in central New York. He married fellow Palatine, Maria Barbara Kast, at Stone Arabia, Montgomery, New York, in 1729.
There is confusion over whether or not George Frederick Helmer was killed or even fought at the Battle of Oriskany on Aug. 6, 1777, especially since he would have been 71 years old at the time. His son, Captain John Frederick (Johann Friedrich) Helmer, was killed in the battle. Another, Lieutenant George Frederick (Georg Friedrich) Helmer II, was seriously wounded, and a third, Lieutenant Adam Frederick (Hans Adam Friedrich) Helmer, became a legend for his heroic scouting contributions during the campaign. His date of death has not been determined, but his place of death and burial is believed to have been at German Flatts, New York.
