Captain John Frederick Helmer (1735 – August 6, 1977), also known as Johann Friedrich Helmer and Friedrich Helmer, was an American Revolutionary War officer, killed at the Battle of Oriskany, while serving as a Captain, in the 4th Regiment,Tryon County (New York) Militia.
Helmer was born in German Flatts, New York, to Maria Barbara Kast, and George Frederick Helmer I, who had been born on June 9, 1706, in Neustadt an der Weinstrasse, a city in the Rhineland-Palatinate region in southwestern Germany. His father emigrated to America, with his parents, sometime before 1710, and eventually settled in one of the numerous Palatine German farming communities on the south side of the Mohawk River in central New York.
His brother Lt. George Frederick Helmer II was seriously wounded at the Battle of Oriskany and another brother Lt. Adam Frederick Helmer, the famous scout, also fought there.
