Leland L. Sweatman, 89, of Virginia, IL passed away Wednesday, July 26, 2017, at his home surrounded by his family.

He was born September 16, 1927 in Virginia, the son of Louis and Lela Korte Sweatman. He married Norma Launer on June 19, 1948 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Bluff Springs, IL and she survives.

He is also survived by five children, Dennis Sweatman (wife, Gloria) of Washington, Marilyn Fee (husband, Michael) of Clinton, IA, Diane Hish (husband, Gary) of Virginia, Cheryl Trogdon (husband, Ed) of Lisle, and Roger Sweatman (wife, Carolyn) of Virginia; ten grandchildren, Jeffrey Sweatman (wife, Elizabeth) of Charlottesville, VA, Kelli Ballard (husband, Jerad) of Washington, Nathan Fee (wife, Heidi) of Clinton, IA, Amanda Ruppel (husband, Ryan) of Arenzville, Renee Becker (husband, Brett) of Pleasant Plains, Bret Hish (wife, Jennifer) of Virginia, Miken Trogdon of Chicago, Zachary Trogdon (wife, Abigail) of Indianapolis, IN, Courtney Sweatman of Virginia, and Justin Sweatman (wife, Jenna) of Virginia; 10 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a grandson, Andrew Sweatman; a sister, Alberta Ring; and a great granddaughter.

Leland was a 1945 graduate of Virginia High School and served in the US Army from 1946-47. He was a life-long farmer in Cass County and an electrician. He was a devoted member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Bluff Springs where he served many years on the church council including several terms as council president and as a Sunday School Teacher.

A dedicated community servant, Leland was a former member of the Virginia School Board and a former director for Cass County Mutual Insurance Company. He served numerous years on the Cass County Fair Board including over 20 years as board president. He was a former chairman and board member of Cass County Service Company-FS and a former co-owner of Cass Implement Company. He was also elected to serve on the Cass County Board of Supervisors.

In his spare time, his passions included collecting old toys, refinishing antique furniture, and rooting for the St. Louis Cardinals.

Funeral services will be held 10:00 am, Monday, July 31, 2017, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Bluff Springs with burial at Walnut Ridge Cemetery in Virginia. The family will meet friends from 3:00 to 5:00 pm Sunday at the Buchanan & Cody Funeral Home in Virginia. Memorial gifts are suggested to St. John’s Lutheran Church or Cass-Schuyler Area Hospice.
