Father of Modern Ethopia. Took the throne 10 Mar 1889 after the previous Emperor Yohannes IV died in battle with The Madhi of Sudan at Gallabat.

Menelik claimed the throne based on his direct male-line descent from King Solomon of Israel. He earned his place in history by humiliating the Kingdom of Italy at the Battle of Adowa on 2 Mar 1896. This was the first time African forces had totally defeated the European invaders, and it preserved Ethiopia's independence as the rest of Africa succumbed to Colonization.

Menelik was succeeded by his maternal grandson, Emperor Lij Iyasu V.
