Born at Seghill, Northumberland, John was the son of George Barker. He attended school at Newcastle before gaining admission to Christs college in 1745.
He was elected Master in the year 1780 and served until he passed away in the 82nd year of his age, 1808.
He married Hannah Dockwray, daughter of Robert Ellison and widow of Thomas Dockwray D.D in 1787.
Hannah passed away two days after his death and they were both interred in the College chapel.
It was said they were a 'Truly Respectable couple'.
