On Saturday, July 22, he was working with Thomas Morales at the California Portland Cement Co. where they were placing a charge for blowing off the face of a cliff. After a premature blast, both men fell 120 feet to the quarry floor. "It is believed that the explosion was caused by a few grains of powder falling into the tamping hole, and igniting by friction as the tamping irons repeatedly struck them. One report is that the men were new at the work, but this is denied, the officials stating that both were among the oldest men employed on the powder crew...."
