GALLATIN, Mo. -- J.D. Coon, 90, Gallatin, died Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2002, at the Missouri Veterans Home in Cameron, Mo.
J.D. was born Feb. 25, 1911, in Trenton, Mo., to Ira and Letha (Evans) Coon. He graduated from Fredonia, Kan., high school and Chillicothe, Mo., business school.
In June of 1946, he married Phyllis Casteel. J.D. sold men's ready-to-wear clothing as an over-the-road salesman before opening the Phyllis Shop in Gallatin, which they owned and operated for 40 years.
During World War II, Mr. Coon served in the Army Air Corps in the South Pacific. He was a member of the Methodist Church, Gallatin; was a Mason in the Gallatin Masonic Lodge, A.F. & A.M. No. 106; and a member in the Moila Shrine Temple of St. Joseph. J.D. was actively involved in the civic activities of Gallatin.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 34 years, Phyllis; and sisters, Mary Eaton and Ethel Burnett.
Survivors: a daughter, Elizabeth Place, and husband, Jerry, Kansas City, Mo.; sister, Caroline Baker, Grove, Okla.; granddaughter, Amy Place, Chicago, Ill.; and grandson, George Place, El Salvador.
Service: 11 a.m. Friday, McWilliams Funeral Home, Gallatin. Burial: Princeton Cemetery, Princeton, Mo. Visitation: one hour prior to service. Friends may call after 10 a.m. Thursday. Memorials: Missouri Veterans Home or Alzheimer's Association.
