William H. Richards, Sr. was born in Chatham, Medina County, Ohio, about 1815. His parents were Daniel Richards (born Maryland ~1786 and died 1830 Ohio) and Mary "Polly" McCormick (born Pennsylvania ~1799 and died Ohio 1863). Daniel Richards and Mary McCormick had been married in Stark County, Ohio on 20 November 1815.
He married Mary Bowman, born~1826, on July 9, 1840, in Medina County, Ohio, when she was fourteen years old, with her Father's permission. Mary's parents were Christopher Bowman and Salvina Schafer Bowman, who had moved from Pennsylvania to Ohio.
In the 1840 Census, the newlywed couple was living next to Mary's father, Christopher Bowman and her oldest brother, John Bowman. William and Mary Richards were married for over 20 years, until her death in Ohio, which occurred sometime from 1860 through the year 1863, when both her parents passed away.
William and Mary Bowman's two oldest sons, William H., Jr. and Jasper Newton, died during their service in the Union Army, during the Civil War.

There have been DNA matches between descendants of William H. Richards, Sr. and his brother, David Richards. There have also been DNA matches between William's descendents and his sister, Elizabeth Jane "Eliza" Richards Lance, but those matches might also be Lance family DNA matches. One of William's sisters was Lucinda Richards Traxler , whose young family was living next door to William's established family in the 1850 US Census for Chatham, Medina County, Ohio. (Lucinda's death certificate listed Daniel Richards as her father and her mother's maiden name as McCormick.)
Also right next door to Lucinda Richards Traxler's family was John Wheeler's older family. At that time, John Wheeler's daughter Mary Wheeler was already married to David Richards and later his daughter Sarah Wheeler would marry David Richard's half-brother, James Lance. (Much later, David Richard's widow, Mary Wheeler, would marry David Richard's step-brother and James Lance's half-brother, Abram Lance.)
William's oldest daughter, Salvina Edmonds "Lovina" Richards Dobson, married William Dobson who was the eldest offspring of Elizabeth Dobson Lance Miller, a step-sister of William.
