Bernard "Benny" Jordan
Bernard "Benny" Jordan, one of the "Greatest Generation," passed away peacefully on August 12, 2017 at the age of 96. Benny was born in Glasgow, Scotland on July 11, 1921 the third of six children to the late Bernard and Mary Laverty Jordan. He emigrated to America in 1948 and returned home to get married. Following his marriage in 1954, Benny and his wife Nan sailed to America to begin their new life in San Francisco. Benny was predeceased by Nan on August 1, 2012. She was the love and soulmate of his life. Benny will be dearly missed by his sons ... and adoring grandchildren..
Benny was predeceased by three of his brothers, John, Stephen, and James. He is survived by his loving sister, and brother, sister-in-law and numerous nieces and nephews in Scotland, England, and the Bay Area.
Benny parachuted into Normandy on D-Day with the 3rd Para Squadron, Royal Engineers, British 6th Airborne, served in the Battle of the Bulge, and parachuted over the Rhine into Germany on March 24, 1945 in Operation Varsity. For nearly 50 years, Benny was a skilled masonry contractor and proud of his work in every neighborhood of San Francisco and surrounding communities. He was a member of the Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers, Local 3, for 69 years and The Caledonian Club of San Francisco for more than 61 years, serving as Honorary Chief of the 146th Scottish Highland Gathering and Games in 2011. Benny was an active member of St. Gabriel parish and grammar school for more than 50 years, serving in the Men's Club and as volunteer soccer coach. He was a lifelong Glasgow Celtic supporter. Benny enjoyed military history, especially his numerous visits to the First and Second World War battlefields in Europe. He loved vacationing at Lake Tahoe with family and friends, had a wonderful sense of humor, loved to tell stories, and travel abroad (even into his nineties).
A private funeral mass was held at St. Gabriel Church followed by interment at Holy Cross Cemetery.
