The Inquest. The coroner had the body of Captain Joseph St. Julian, who was drowned in the canal near Romeo Tuesday evening, remarked to the undertaking establishment of Chamberlin & Davis, in Lockort, and __ inquest held. The fury rendered the following verdict: "We find that Joseph St. Julian came to his death accidentally falling off from the boat Montauk, and drowning in the Illinois & Michigan canal, and that we attach no blame to any one. Some persons suggested that he must have been intoxicated at the time but Wiliam Milne of the canal office, who gave him his clearance papers less than two hours before, said there was no evidence that he had been drinking at all then, and did not believe that drink had anything to do with it." Deceased was one of the oldest canal men in the state, having followed it for thirty-five years. The Joliet Republican & Sun, Friday, May 24, 1889, p5

Drowned in the Canal. The canal people telephoned last night for coroner Mills to go up and hold an inquest on the body of Captain Joseph St. Julian, who was drowned about eight o'clock p.m., a little north of Romeo. Capt. St. Julian was well known and very much liked in Joliet, where he had lived about forty years. He marred the second time about a year ago and leaves the widow with a good property. He was a prominent member of the St. John's Society of the German Catholic church, from which is widow will received $1,000 in cash. He also carried $2,500 insurance in debt. Joliet Daily Republic, May 2, 1889, Wednesday.
