Adam was the son of Henry Hilt and Mary Gottlieb of Germany. He was born shortly after the family immigrated to New York. A few years later they moved to Philadelphia. He was listed as 'Aaron' on the 1860 census. In 1880 he was working as a driver.
In 1930 Adam was residing at the Burlington County Almshouse. He was 84 years old. The residence burned down in 1937. He died of pneumonia at age 87 according to his death certificate. Other siblings in this family died in Pennsylvania, as did Adam's parents.
