Born in Knoxville, she grew up and went to school in Rock Island. She moved to Tullahoma in her young-adult years and immediately called it home. She worked at the State of Tennessee Department of Employment Security Office in Tullahoma for 30-plus years, where she could do what she loved in helping other people find meaningful employment.
She loved cooking for her friends and neighbors, quilting, gardening, painting and spending time with her family.
She prided herself on being a descendant of Andrew Ferrier McWhirter, as well as being a member of a 'First Family of Tennessee.' She was also an avid historian and genealogist, and she is best known for her research and her published works regarding the 1st Alabama Cavalry, USV. Her research and books have touched thousands of people over the last two decades.
