Carl Howard Ross
Bozeman, Montana

Carl Howard Ross was born Feb. 5, 1921 in Manhattan, Montana to Lena and Ray Ross. Carl was the son of a coal miner (near Bozeman Pass) and third born of fourteen children. He was raised in Bozeman and married Ruby Arlint in 1940. Carl and Ruby had two boys: Jerry and Howard.

As a young man, Carl worked on the Flying D Ranch, Misco Feed Mill and Darigold. He returned to the Flying D as a contract farmer in 1964 until his retirement in 1978. In 1984, Carl and Ruby left Bozeman for warmer weather and moved to Barstow, California. They enjoyed retirement and traveled frequently. He divorced Ruby and later married Clydine Marr. Carl was a strong, hard-working and independent man who took pride maintaining his home and garden even into his 90's. Carl returned to Bozeman in 2011.

Carl lived a full life and enjoyed farming, faithful dogs and horses, rodeos, drives in the country, football and elk hunting. Carl loved the outdoors and took pride teaching family to hunt, fish and appreciate all that Montana offered. Carl often recited exciting stories of his life, always word for word. Carl had a sharp mind and his experiences in the Gallatin Valley and recollection of history was fascinating. He maintained a healthy collection of clever jokes to tell with a twinkle in his eye.

Carl enjoyed good country bands and loved to dance. His dancing pace was a little slower but still going strong at 96. The love and support from friends at the American Legion in Manhattan, Montana, and dancing partner Pat was important to Carl after returning to Bozeman.

Carl passed away on Aug. 20, 2017 at the age of 96 close to the Flying D Ranch and the mountains of Montana where he was born and experienced so much of life.

He is survived by son Howard (wife Peggy); four grandsons: Mike, Jim, Troy and Chad; eight great-grandchildren; three sisters, one brother, many nieces and nephews and special friend Pat Samplowski of Belgrade. Carl was preceded in death by parents Lena and Ray, son Jerry, Clydine, Ruby and nine siblings.

In lieu of flowers, we ask that donations be sent through Dahl Funeral & Cremation Service (300 Highland Blvd, Bozeman, MT, 59715) in Carl's honor to the American Legion Post 87, Manhattan MT.

A special celebration of Carl's life will be held at 11 a.m. on Sept. 20, 2017, at Dahl Funeral & Cremation Service Tribute Center with a reception to follow.
