Dr. Justin Aalpoel, a retired thoracic surgeon, died on Sunday, May 25, 2008, at the age of 88. Born in Wisconsin to Dutch immigrants and raised on a dairy farm in Lynden, he graduated from Hope College in Michigan and the University of Chicago School of Medicine. During the Korean War, he served as a captain with a Mobile Army Surgical Hospital (MASH), where he performed surgery, at times around the clock, and was awarded the Bronze Star.
