FORMER SLAVE CLAIMING TO BE 106 YEARS OLD DIED LAST SATURDAY
"Aunt Ann" Higginbotham, colored, and former slave, who died at her home in Bowling Green Saturday, was buried in the Bowling Green cemetery Tuesday. Highly respected by members of her race and a large number of white people to whom she was familiarly, known as "Aunt Ann," she claimed to be 106 years old, although the date of her birth is not authentic. Before the war between the states, she was known as Annie Kingcannon, and belonged to the late Dick Pearson, who had a farm on Mountain Creek, seven miles from McMinnville. Following the freeing of slaves she was married and had since lived in the Bowling Green community. Surviving are two sons, Martin Higginbotham who lives in the house with her, Marcus Higginbotham, three daughters, Ruby Baker, McMinnville; Annie Mai Hudgens, Chattanooga, and Ella Johnson, Nashville, eleven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Funeral arrangements were under direction of the John W. High Funeral Home.
