A member of the Hoop Spur Lodge of the Progressive Farmers and Household Union of America, Melvin Lemons was killed on the first day of the Phillips County War, 1 October, 1919, during the fighting which broke out between the sheriff's posse sent to apprehend those responsible for the killing of railroad detective William Allen Adkins and the wounding of deputy sheriff Charles Pratt at the ambush near Hoop Spur Church at about 11:30 PM, 30 September,1919.
