Cinematographer. He worked with many of the world's most renowned directors, including Rainer Werner Fassbinder, John Sayles, Martin Scorsese, Francis Ford Coppola, and Barry Levinson, and was three times nominated for an Academy Award for Cinematography. His work was dynamic, complicated, and elegant. He invented the 360-degree pan shot, called in German the "Ballhaus-Kreisel."
