Mary Virginia Ivy was born to James Harley Ivy Sr., and Mae Wooldridge Ivy, on September 11, 1923 in Sayre, Oklahoma.
The middle child of five, Mary Virginia grew up in Waurika, Oklahoma. She graduated in 1940 at the age of 16, valedictorian for Waurika High School. Then she attended the University of Oklahoma earning degrees in piano performance and music education. Married to Alan Holland Jenkins in 1950, they raised four children in Oklahoma City, moving to Norman in 1961.
Virginia was organist for the First Christian Church for 19 years, and was an accompanist for the OU School of Music. Virginia and Alan were supporters of the musical arts, and all four of their children played multiple instruments. Virginia loved to travel and encouraged her children to visit and live in foreign countries. After her son Harley was injured in a car accident in 1979 she devoted her life to him.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Alan, brothers James Harley Ivy Jr., and wife Brunhilt, Red Ivy and wife Ruth, and Charles Lee Ivy; brother-in-law Albert C. Buswell Jr.; nieces Karen Ivy and Janelle Powell.
She is survived by her sister Margaret Buswell of Del City; by her four children: Carl Jenkins, Silver Spring, MD, Harley Jenkins, Lee Nelson and husband Mike, and Kay Jenkins, all of Norman, OK; by seven grandchildren and two great-granddaughters: Aiden, Colm, Ronan, Cillian, Katherine, Matthew, Aric, Mira, and Ella; and by numerous nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank her long-time physician Dr. Thomas Merrill and nursing staff, and Valir Hospice. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the First Christian Church in Waurika, Oklahoma, 502 N. Elm, 73573. No services.
