Paul Killen moved onto Glory to be with His Lord on Sunday, November 12, 2017, at Neshoba County Hospital.
Paul Killen was born in Neshoba County on August 4, 1930, the fifth of ten children of Lee and Rachel Winstead Killen. As a child, he attended school at House and County Line. He lived and farmed there, and held several various jobs, including owning and running his own bus route for the County Line School System, hauling pulpwood, and working at local sawmills. At age 17, he moved to Meridian, MS, and began working at Hardin’s Bakery, which is where he met his future bride, Ester Kirkland of Kemper County. After their marriage in 1950, the couple moved to Casa Grande, Arizona, for a short period where Paul was employed delivering milk to the local businesses and homes. Upon returning to Mississippi, Paul worked again at Hardin’s, and then at Smith’s Bakery before he moved his family to Jackson, MS, at which time he began working in the sheet metal trade while attending night school to become a Sheet Metal Journeyman. In 1955, Paul moved his family again to Jackson County on the Mississippi Gulf Coast where he continued his employment at the Ingalls Shipyard, and later at Pascagoula Sheet Metal Works, where he became shop foreman/manager. In 1967, Paul and Ester with their three children, Delton, Kim, and Regina, moved to Union, MS, to go into business for himself by establishing Philadelphia Sheet Metal Works.
During his time on the coast, Paul was a member of the Lion’s Club and instrumental in working with the establishment of the Home Of Grace Recovery Center and two local churches, Friendship Baptist and Unity Baptist, all of Pascagoula. At the time of their moving back to Neshoba County, he and his family were active members of Pine View Baptist in Moss Point. Paul served as a deacon of his church for 59 years, and served in many leadership capacities, including Sunday School Director, Teacher, Brotherhood Director, Training Union Director, and many other positions. For the past 50 years Paul has been a faithful member of Pine Grove Baptist Church in House, MS, attending during latter years as health permitted. Also during this time he served the Neshoba County Baptist Association by heading and/or serving on many committees, including the construction committee which led to the design and completion of the Neshoba County Baptist Association multipurpose building. He had a passion for studying the Word and shared with all who would listen. He loved his Lord and served Him well.
As a 48 year member of the Philadelphia Community Development Partnership (formerly known as the Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce), Paul was always interested in advancing industry in the city and was a supporter of the local business community.
Paul was known by all who knew him as a man who loved God first, then his family, and then his church. He was a tremendous man of God, a strong spiritual influence, and a good provider to his family. He was known for his honesty, utter integrity, and strong work ethic. His gracious generosity led him to be an encourage to others, in both emotional and practical ways, always urging them to achieve their potential and live their lives under the direction of God. His tireless service, up to the end of his life, built a legacy that still leads his family even onto the next generation, yet to come. He was a good family man and neighbor to all who knew him. He will be missed.
Paul is survived by his wife of 67 years. He is survived by his son, Delton Killen and wife, Gayle Howle Killen; son, Kim Killen; and daughter, Regina Killen Cleveland and husband, Ricky Cleveland, Sr., all of Union. He is also survived by five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren: Lee Killen and wife Jill Fitzgibbons with Sydnee and Peyton; Brad Killen with Nate; Vicky Killen Wallace with Tristan and Eythan, Paizleigh and Andy; Tim Cleveland and wife Heather, all of Union, and Paul Cleveland and wife Jessica Ramage Cleveland with William and Rachel Ester of Huntsville, Alabama. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lee and Rachel Killen; and siblings, Imogene Barrier, Cecil Killen, Jeanette Mason, Jerry Killen, Ellen (Pete) Cook; and survived by his siblings, Dorothy Henley, Frances McDonald, Jack Killen and Doris Ashmore; a host of nieces, nephews and their families.
The family extends a special thank-you to his caregivers and friends-like-family at Atwood, especially Kaitlyn Atwood Adams, Monica Kelly, Bonnie Bounds, Regina Johnson, Dale Boler, Beth Franklin, Zane Jones and Liz Backstrom. Also a sincere thank-you to Dale Yates, Kara Korbe, Dr. Myers, Dr. Martin and Tracy Kilpatrick.
