DEATH OF ALFRED BARLOW:
Brain Fever Takes Away a Prominent Coal Operator
Alfred Barlow died yesterday morning at 10 o’clock at his residence No. 22 Church Avenue. Mr. Barlow had an attack of pneumonia about three weeks ago that turned into brain fever, which was the immediate cause of death.
The deceased was the superintendent of the Elkhorn Coal and Coke Company at Mayberry, Wva. He was the pioneer coal operator in West Virginia, having gone there about ten years ago and opened up the first lease. Mr. Barlow was 52 years of age and was born in New Philadelphia, Schuylkill County, Pa. He removed to Norfolk last spring on account of ill health and there contracted chills. He came to this city about one month ago and rented the house of Captain Henri Davin, on Church Avenue.
The deceased leaves a wife and nine children, namely: James E., William H.S., Alfred L., Howard P., Raymond B., Webster P., Mrs. E.J. Hall, Mary J., and Bertha E. His brother, E. Barlow, of Schuylkill, arrived in the city on Thursday, but the patient was unconscious, and never recognized him. W.H. Barlow, another brother, at Mayberry, Wva., was telegraphed to, and will probably arrive in the city on the noon train today.
The deceased was a member of Elkhorn Lodge, No. 190, I.O.U.F, and the members of Mountain Dale and Mount Vernon Lodges of this city will bury the deceased according to the ties of the order. The pall-bearers will be selected from among the order.
Brief services will be held at the house tomorrow noon to be followed by the funeral services at the Greene Memorial Church, conducted by Rev. W.F. Hamner, after which the remains will be interred in Fairview Cemetery.
