"Civic Leader at St. Marys is Dead at 74. Clarence M. Yocum, 74, of St. Marys, general manager of the Farmers Union Cooperative business association 42 years and mayor of St. Marys for six years, died in a Topeka hospital Thursday. He had been ill about three months. Mr Yocum was born April 9, 1887, at Rossville and moved with his parents to St. Marys when he was six years old. He attended public schools there and the St Marys College. He taught school for nine years in the community and became Farmers Union general manager, July 1, 1919. On December 12-16, 1960, WIBW-TV promoted a celebration in honor of Mr. Yocum for his distinguished service in the community. Hundreds of his friends attended the event. On May 1, he received his 50-year Masonic pin. He served nine years on the city commission. Surviving are his widow, Mary D. Yocum, a daughter, Betty Hart, and two grandchildren, two sisters, Pearl Barnes and Alice Sibley, and a brother, George Yocum. Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Congregational Lutheran Church in St. Marys, with burial in Valley View Cemetery. Special music will be furnished by Rev. Ernest Huntzinger who will be accompanied by Beth Oveson. Friends may call at the Vershelden Funeral Home from 5 p.m. today until 1 p.m. Saturday at which time the body will be taken to the church for services."
