Johnathan Jefferson Allen was born 27 May 1853 in Missouri to William Allen and Rosanna (Hobson) Allen. He had seven siblings with himself being the oldest son. His family lived in Dent, Crawford, Phelps, and Miller Counties in Missouri. Little is known of his life and childhood. On 25 April 1874, he married Martha Ann Earp in Miller County, Missouri. Five of the known children of their union are Jasper, Margaret, Minnie, Alice, and Clarance. John was widowed by about 1900 and was living in Linwood, Kansas in 1909. His occupation was generally listed as Laborer, but was also skilled with a team of horses, and in Farming and the variety of tasks associated with it. He passed away at the Kansas City General Hospital of Pneumonia on 16 November 1941 and was buried in the Highland Park Cemetery. At the time of his death, he was in the care of his Grand-daughter Mrs. Sadie (Hull) Armstrong, who provided the information on his Death Certificate. He shares the cemetery plot with his Grandson, John C. Gilmer Jr. who died at the age of two in 1917. Their graves are unmarked.
