Mildred "Millie" Kaempfer, 94, passed away on July 1, 2012, with her children at her side. Born in Aubrey, Texas along with her identical twin sister on September 27, 1917, Millie grew up on a farm in Green Valley, Texas. She was a 1939 graduate of the Texas State College for Women (now Texas Woman's University) in Denton, Texas. A veteran of WWII, Millie served on active duty as a lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps Reserve at Camp Lejeune from 1944 - 1946. It was here that she met a handsome young major, William "Bill" Kaempfer, a combat veteran of 5 Pacific landings, including Guadalcanal and Iwo Jima. They married in 1946. As the wife of a career Marine, Millie moved her family many times until Col. Kaempfer's retirement in 1959, when the family settled in Jacksonville where she then resumed her teaching career. After the death of her husband, and retirement from 20 years of teaching in the Duval County schools, Millie relocated to Tallahassee in 1980 to be near her children. Millie was an active member of Alpha Delta Kappa teacher's sorority, the Woman's Club of Tallahassee, Ladies Auxiliary of the Military Officers Association, and a 17-year office volunteer at the Red Cross. Raised in a Christian family, Millie remained a faithful servant of Christ throughout her life, practicing her faith for the last 32 years through the loving community of the Episcopal Church of the Advent. Millie is preceded in death by her husband, Bill, and her older sister Wilma Owens. She is survived by her daughter, Ann Douglas, her son, AI Kaempfer (wife Susan); her granddaughter Marie Nabors (husband Jacob); her grandson, Ben Kaempfer (wife Lindsey); her great-granddaughter Madison Nabors, all of Tallahassee; and her twin, Mary Jackson of Sparks, NV. A memorial service will be held on July 5th at 11:00 o'clock at the Episcopal Church of the Advent. Guests are invited to the church's parish hall immediately following the service for a reception and to visit with the family. Her remains will be interned next to her husband in Orange Park, Florida at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Episcopal Church of the Advent, 815 Piedmont Dr. Tallahassee, FL. 32312 or the local chapter of the American Red Cross, 187 Office Plaza, Tallahassee, FL. 32301. Bevis Funeral Home, (850)385-2193, www.bevisfh.com, is in charge of the arrangements.
