Mrs. Rider, who was 90 years old, died Thursday in Cantril. She was the only child of Mr. and Mrs. John Martin and was born in Jefferson county. She spent her entire life in Iowa with the exception of two years in Ohio. Her father died when she was small and her mother later married Aaron B. Downs. When about 13 years old she moved with her family to Van Buren county, settling on a farm four miles east of Cantril.
She was married in 1859 to Edmund Rider, a native of Ohio who had come to Iowa a few years before. To this union were born nine children, all dying in childhood except two, Mrs. Mary Van Fleet and Mrs. Edith Van Fossen of Cantril. The two daughters and three grandchildren survive. The grandchildren are Joe Van Fossen of Chicago, E.V. Van Fossed of Ottumwa and Margaret Van Fossen of Cantril. Her husband died November 16, 1919, preceding her in death 15 years lacking one day. She had three brothers and three sisters of the Downs family, all of whom preceded her in death except Mrs. Jennie S. Mills of Edmond, Okla.
Mrs. Rider was a charter member of the Cantril Christian church.
