Second son of Rev. Alexander Craighead and wife, Margaret, of Mecklenburg County NC. Rev. Craighead was pastor of Sugaw Creek Presbyterian Church in Charlotte, Mecklenburg County, NC.

Robert married Hannah Clark of Mecklenburg County NC. Current Craighead Road in Charlotte NC runs through their plantation where they lived until moving to Tennessee. The road was named for them. It is about a mile from Sugaw Creek Prebyterian Church on North Tryon Street in Charlotte NC where Robert's father was pastor.

During American Revolution Robert was a captain under Gen. Sumter. Severely wounded in the shoulder at the Battle of Guilford Courthouse in Guilford County NC on 15 Mar 1781. He would have died on the battlefield except for a Catawba Indian who evacuated him and got him on a wagon which took him to a destination where he was cared for by the men of Gen. Morgan who were guarding British troops taken prisoner at the Battle of Cowpens. He never completely recovered from his injury. The Catawba Indian who rescued him visited with Capt Craighead every year until the captain moved his family to Tennessee about 1789 or 1790.

At that time, Robert sold his property in North Carolina and purchased land on the Holston River about 6 miles north of Knoxville TN from Col. Francis Ramsey. He lived on this land until about 1792 when he moved his family into Knoxville where he served as a civil magistrate for Knox County and he and four of his sons became elders in the First Presbyterian Church of Knoxville.

From a letter written by his great-grandson, Maj. Robert Clark McRee, of Soddy, TN about 1900:

"He ever sustained the reputation of an excellent citizen and died at an advanced age and is buried in the graveyard of First Presbyterian Church in Knoxville."

He and Hannah were the parents of 9 children:

Jane b. 27 Mar 1772, married William McRee
Mary b. 10 May 1776, d. 1778
William b. 1 Oct 1778, married Jane Gillespie
