Algenora Phelps, 74, of the 1300 block of Church St., a retired custodian, died May 28, 1994, in Sentara Leigh Hospital.

Mrs. Phelps was born in Princess Anne County, daughter of the late Maggie Freeman Gilchrist and Thomas Gilchrist. She was retired from New Light Baptist Church, Virginia Beach, after 28 years of service, and was also a member and treasurer of Pastor's Aide of the church.

Survivors include her husband, Warren R. Phelps; one daughter, Roberta G. Jennings of Virginia Beach; one sister, Jermaine J. Stevenson of Virginia Beach; five grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and two aunts.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday in New Light Baptist Church, 5549 Indian River Road, by the Rev. Rudolph B. Lewis. Burial will be in Roosevelt Memorial Park. The family will assemble at the residence. The body will be placed in church at 11 a.m. Thursday. Hale Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
