Achilles was our first Doberman. We got him when we lived in Austin, Texas. A neighbor had moved out and left the dog behind--how people can do such things is beyond me. For about a week, he wandered the neighborhood and slept in the empty field behind the house. I was scared of him at first, and he was scared of me and wouldn't come too close. But I was determined to help him, and I started putting food and water out for him. Still, he wouldn't get too close.

My roast beef won him over at last. I put some by the backdoor, and he couldn't resist coming close to get a bite. I braced myself, went outside, and somehow found the courage to pet him.

He was my dog from that moment on. He followed me everywhere and was always watching me and slept at my feet. He was fiercely loyal to me and my family, an absolutely wonderful dog.

We took him to the vet, got him some shots, etc. and found out that he was about 3 years old (I'll always believe he was 5-6.). We spent quite a bit of time camping with him out in the Texas wilds and on long hikes at the State Parks. He had to chase everything he saw.

We moved back to our home in Missouri in 1993 and brought Achilles with us, and he had a long, happy, and healthy life with very few medical problems until he got very old.

When his health deteriorated, we decided that it would be best to put him to sleep.

We will always miss this beloved family member.
