Son of John and Ann Payne ,Husband of Phoebe Payne of Gosport ,Hampshire∼HMS Hood was the last battlecruiser built for the Royal Navy; ordered in 1916 and put into service in 1920, she would be sunk by the Bismarck on 24, May 1941. Only 3 individuals would survive the sinking; almost 1500 "Sons of England" would die, immediately.
John William Payne was the leading stoker of the Hood, and was a married father of two; he was 35 years old at the time of his death, and was survived by his wife Phoebe and their two children.
John had a twin brother, George, whom also served in the Royal Navy, but who was not on the Hood; I am presently trying to trace different leads on George, and will update this page accordingly.
There has recently been some paperwork comment which would suggest that both Johnny and George were British Home Children; I have found both names with correlating birthdate information on the British Home Children website, and Johnny's middle initial - 'W' for William - is also listed; this may explain why I have never been able to 'find' much about his parents, childhood, surviving brother, etc. I will continue to study this latest twist -

There is a Phoebe Sarah Payne listed on this site that, after comparison of information, dates, etc., I have decided to attach to Johnny's page as his widow. She would die two years after Johnny, as is noted in the Civilian Dead files; in just the few months since I began researching all branches of my various surnames affected by the Battle of Britain and other casualties of WWII, I have become so much more learned of the devastation and enormous death toll - I think that I truly thought that the Battle of Britain, i.e. the Blitz was an event that so to speak, rolled in, took place and rolled out and that was that. As I began to trace something that nobody in my family has done before, I was stunned to discover that not only had our family suffered major war dead in various branches of the service and in numerous countries, but our civilian dead was staggering. We have so far traced individuals to Scotland, throughout England, Wales, China and other locations that were not verified in records until I began sending for birth, death and miltary files/records.
All of this brings us to Phoebe. For Johnny's widow, I have a recently acquired photo, and a few letters which usually refer to her by "Phoebe" in passing, but some which also call her "Sarah" or "Sarah Phoebe". The War Dead records put her age at 58, which does not make sense - had Johnny survived the Hood sinking, he would have been 38 at the time of his wife's passing; there is too much of a discrepancy in the age, here, and there is not another Sarah/Phoebe Payne anywhere in any file, that I can find. I think that this is a clerical error that has run wild for seventy years. And so, I have truly put up on this page what I believe to be true, but as I have done numerous times, so far, I will update info as I get it, and I now update this page today by stating that Phoebe must have been a victim of one of the many, many Blitz bombings that shook Britain month after month, year after year.
