Joseph Rains, resident of California for Long Number of Years is Dead

Joseph Rains, pioneer of California since the year 1849, and for a long number of years a resident of Petaluma, passed away quietly last night at the home of his daughter Mrs. William Duncan, at 204 Lake Street in this city, following an illness which has lasted over the past nine months. At the time of his demise Mr. Rains was seventy-six years, eleven months and
twentythree days old.

Joseph Rains, was born in Fountain City, Indiana, in the year 1837. In 1849 he moved to California and made his home near Petaluma where he resided for a long number of years before moving to Maricopa, from where he later moved to Porterville.

The deceased had been in Madera exactly one month at the time of his death and was confined to his bed all of that time. Mr. Rains leaves four daughters and one son to mourn his death, as follows; Willard Rains, residence unknown. Mrs. William Duncan of Madera, Mrs. Harry Eaton,
of San Francisco. Mrs. De. Connell of Los Angeles and Mrs. H. V. Martson of Broderick. Mrs. Martson and Mrs. William Duncan of this city will be the
only daughters present at the funeral which will be held from the R. C. Jay undertaking parlors in this city tomorrow afternoon at 2:30 o’clock.

Interment will be made In Arbor Vitae Cemetery.
